Starting Seedlings for Mid-April Using Soil Blocks
I’ve been preparing for my spring garden by starting seedlings in soil blocks, which offers numerous benefits for my tomatoes, herbs, and leafy greens. Living in Zone 3b Quebec, I need to make the most of our short growing season!
Why I Chose Soil Blocks
Soil blocks have gained popularity in sustainable gardening. They provide excellent root development and eliminate transplant shock since there’s no container to disturb the roots. So far, they have worked very well in my garden. The only downside compared to cell trays is that they are messier to work with.
What I’ve Planted
I’ve started several varieties using the soil block method:
- Tomatoes: Three varieties including Glacier (an early producer perfect for our cold climate), Brandy Wine (a longer-season heirloom), and Madagascar
- Swiss Chard
- Persil frisé (Curly Parsley)
- Capucines (Nasturtiums): A quick-growing edible flower
- Molène
Preparing My Soil Mix
For successful seedlings, I’ve found soil quality is crucial:
- I use a specialized seed starting mix that I have mixed with half homemade vermicompost. Poor soil is a common mistake when starting tomato seeds
- When making your own mix, ensure it’s light and well-draining
My Planting Process
-
Preparing soil blocks:
- I moisten my soil mix before forming blocks. It should be damp but not soaked
-
Seed placement:
- For my tomatoes, I plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and lightly cover with soil
- For smaller seeds like Swiss chard and parsley, I place them more shallowly
-
Germination:
- I keep soil blocks consistently moist and warm during germination
Caring for My Seedlings
-
Fertilization:
- Tomato seedlings needs fertilization once they start growing
- I will be using a diluted worm tea
-
Transplanting plan:
- Once seedlings have developed in their initial blocks, I plan to transplant vigorous seedlings to larger blocks or containers when needed
Specific Tips for My Zone 3b Garden
- Tomatoes: I’ve started tomatoes seedling later than I used to start them out as recommended by other local home gardeners
By starting these seedlings in soil blocks, I’m giving my garden a head start while promoting healthier root development for stronger plants throughout our growing season.
