Rug pulled on hyprland

Hyprscroller Won’t Be Supported Anymore On Hyprland
I’ve been using Hyprland with the Hyprscroller plugin for a while now which turns Hyprland into Niri window management. I just got rug pulled since the developer has archived Hyprscroller and moved on to a new project called “scroll” which is a fork of Sway WM.
Configuration hell
It’s always frustrating when a tool you’ve integrated into your workflow suddenly gets abandoned. I spent quite a bit of time getting Hyprland configured properly, and now I’m left looking for alternatives. Not blaming the dev since open source projects evolve and priorities change.
The Contenders
So now I’m trying to decide between two options:
Scroll (Sway Fork)
The same developer who created Hyprscroller has now created Scroll, which is a very fresh fork of Sway (just released in April 2025).
Why Scroll is an interesting alternative to Niri
- Created by the same developer as Hyprscroller, so likely similar in functionality
- Built on Sway, which has a reputation for being extremely stable
- Active community support via the Sway ecosystem
- Should provide a familiar scrollable experience
What makes me hesitant about Scroll
- Very new project, might not work as well (although it could actually work better because of Sway) plus I don’t want to get rug pulled again
- Would require learning Sway’s configuration system
Niri WM
The other option I’m considering is Niri WM which is a whole WM similar to Hyprscroller instead of being a fork or a plugin.
Why Niri over Scroll
- As of now, Niri is the winner for the appearance. It pretty much looks similar to Hyprland with Hyprscroller
- A WM that is based on the best layout system (in my opinion)
What makes me hesitant about Niri
- Less stable than Sway (although possibly more than Hyprland)
- Currently doesn’t support X11 applications out of the box
I’m leaning toward giving Scroll a try first, given that it’s built on the more mature Sway codebase and should provide a similar experience to Hyprscroller. But Niri is definitely tempting.
I need to try these, hoping that it will be fast to setup to my liking.
